Finalized at the Rome SDG16 Conference in May, the Amplified Commitments and Partnerships for Accelerated Action: Rome Civil Society Declaration on SDG16+ is now open for endorsements on a rolling basis. This is a resource that can be used by those seeking to influence their country’s SDG reporting at the upcoming UN High Level Political Forum in July and General Assembly in September.

The Rome Declaration calls on all actors – especially Member States and international agencies – to fulfill their commitments and accelerate action to build peaceful, just, and inclusive societies. A number of the themes that the Justice for All campaign, coalition and legal empowerment community have been working on were championed and included in the declaration, including:

  • Taking a people-centered approach to SDG16 implementation
  • Promoting the role of civil society in policy-making, planning, implementation, budgeting, and reporting on SDG16
  • Strengthening data, monitoring, and accountability mechanisms, including using non-official data to ensure evidence-based results
  • Protecting justice defenders and guarding against shrinking civic space
  • Recognizing and funding grassroots legal empowerment groups
  • Scaling up commitments and investments at the HLPF and SDG Summit

You can find a full summary of the Declaration’s main points in this civil society statement delivered at the Rome Conference.

The Rome Civil Society Declaration is the product of an online consultation that was promoted amongst the TAP Membership and other civil society networks in the weeks prior to the Rome Conference, as well as deliberations during the Rome Conference Civil Society Day. The extensive process to draft this resolution was guided by three co-facilitators, including Coco Lammers from Namati, Peter van Sluijs from the Civil Society Platform for Peacebuilding and Statebuilding, and Pascal Richard from the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict.

At the Conference, there was a lot of interest, excitement, and acknowledgment from Member States around the importance of SDG16+. It is time for civil society to build on this momentum and accelerate progress by pushing for commitments at the HLPF and General Assembly. We urge you to join us and endorse the Rome Civil Society Declaration HERE. Additionally, please share this document with your partners and networks as well – the moment is now.
